Common Health Problems in Dogs

Dogs are faithful pets. To ensure that they stay with us a long time and live in good health, it is important that you, their owner, know some of the common health disorders that your furry four-legged friends face. With early detection and veterinary intervention, there is a better chance of success in their treatment.

Ear Infection

This is the most common canine problem. Symptoms of ear infection include head shaking, tilting, or scratching. It is possible that there is swelling and redness of the affected ear/s as a result of the vigorous scraping. Foul smell coming from the ear/s may also manifest, which may be accompanied by yellow, brown, or bloody discharge. Common causes of ear infection include allergies, ear mites, yeast, and bacteria.

Internal parasites in dogs include whipworms, hookworms, roundworms, and tapeworms. If your pets are experiencing any of these symptoms, they probably have a worm infestation: diarrhea, weight loss, scooting on his bottom, and a change in appetite. Having a rough, dry coat and an overall poor appearance are other indicators of presence of internal parasites.

Have you noticed your dogs scratching vigorously? Did this result to hair loss? It is possible that your pets have fleas. Other symptoms that indicate your dogs are infested with fleas include the presence of small black dots on their skin. If left untreated, fleas can cause allergic reactions and can even lead to anemia resulting from blood loss.

Vomiting and Diarrhea

Causes of vomiting may include intestinal parasites, infection, or food poisoning. Vomiting may be accompanied by abdominal heaving, lethargy, excessive drooling, and diarrhea. On the other hand, diarrhea may be caused by internal parasites, adverse reactions to food, stress, and parvo virus. Make sure that you provide your affected dogs with adequate, clean water to prevent the likelihood of dehydration as a result of diarrhea.
